Just spoke to my occupational therapist about having my knuckle replaced before my knee replacement ( was going for the easy option first) but was told I have to have knee done first as I will be using a crutch / walking stick for at least 12 weeks after surgery and all that pressure on my hand / knuckle would not be good for me. So left message for my rheumatoid nurse to ring me back and I will ask to see the knee surgeon instead Scared , im seeing him for my 3 year follow up on the left knee on 15 June any way so occupational therapist said if I explain this they might extend appointment time and look at the two knees. Last time I had my left knee done surgeon told me off for leaving it late ( knee was no longer straight ) so he put a spacer in the out side of my knee to try and straighten it up . I know I will be happy once it's done , just got to get my head round it !

Hi Sophie

Must admit, I struggle with my crutches because I have a wrist replacement and weight bearing on it is difficult and sometimes impossible! I need a finger joint replacing and some knuckle joints (ulnar deviation) but I also need knee replacements. It is difficult when things decide to go wonky all at once! I'm sure you will be better placed to have the knee done first (although, like you, I would probably have gone for the easier option! ) and get rid of the awful pain and discomfort it brings with it. Orthopaedics won't do either of my knees until the RA is controlled so it's a waiting game for me!

Hope things go to plan Sophie and you are able to get sorted. How's your little one doing?

Hi Lyn, thanks for you reply my son is doing great he will be 7 in April and I've promised him a party for all his school friends . He made me laugh yesterday as I rang to speak to him before my mum took him to parents evening and I was worried he would be upset it was not me going , first thing he said was " mum why did you put butter on my barny bear ham sandwich ? " I could not stop laughing LOL . Hope they can get your RA under control soon ,you must be so fed up with it. This has all started suddenly for me as I have been great on the Enbrel ( no swelling or fluid on joints ) I do have damaged joints from the years when the disease was not controlled, must admit It scares the hell out of me thinking what is further down the road . This forum is great taking to people who understand Smile

Seeing surgeon on the 4th of May. I am worried though as I am having right hip pain don't know if the enbrel has stopped working (bloods done in clinic came back fine last week ) but hands and elbows don't feel right , just told to up my painkillers ! Went and stayed in mums last week as I needed a complete rest ( single mum of a nearly 7 year old ) it was great. We have come home for weekend but are going back Sunday night for the week , sisters been doing school run as I feel very depressed and could not stop crying doctor won't give me anti depresents as she wants to see if it's anxiety first ( suffered panick attacks last year ) but have not had one ( thank god ) think I've come near to one but had cbt last year and used what I learnt then to try and keep a lid on it ! My worries are having knee done then not being able to exercise with hip pain ,my hands are knackerd anyway and I suffer from right side lower back pain ( same side as knee that needs replacing and hip that's hurting) will tell surgeon all this when I see him .

Dear Sophie.
It's so good that you have a supportive family. Just a thought on the anti depressants etc. I was getting quite depressed and couldn't stop crying around Christmas and I actually wondered if my life was worth the effort. My rheumie nurse said that the depression was probably linked not only to the new diagnosis and coming to terms with that but also there are physical things going on in the body and brain with RA that can cause low mood. I was referred to counselling in the NHS clinical health psychology dep't at my local hospital and have had 3 sessions, my last session is due in a month. I have found it helpful and was given lots of help around sleep and relaxation as well as questionnaires that gave me an anxiety level and depression level score (I was border line for both). The psychologist also said I would be an ideal candidate for short term ant depressant medication and I am considering this before talking to the GP on Monday. If I want to go ahead with this the psychologist said he'd recommend it directly to the GP if the GP needed persuading. I just wanted to remind you and anyone else reading this that there is help available for those of us who are finding things tough emotionally. I wish you lots of luck with your forthcoming surgery. Keep us posted about how you get on. Best wishes from Naomi.

Hi Naomi thanks for your reply,

I've had counselling already which was very helpful , I do feel in abetter frame of mind now my family are helping ( I usually try and do what I can with out help ) but now realise that I just can't do it any more. Doctor wants to see me again next week to see how I am. I tried Prozac 3 years ago but it made me shake so I stopped it, my sister is on a low dose anti depressant(can not remember the name ) so was going to ask about that one. Just going to take one day at a time now and try not to worry about the future!
